About This Colonial Home Remodel
Opening the Space and Building an Addition for a Modern Kitchen
This 1940s Colonial had a very dark kitchen, breakfast nook, and bathroom crammed into a small area. The homeowners approached us and wanted to modernize and update the space to make it appropriate for modern living. We gutted the area and added a 16' x 24' addition off the back of the house to provide the family with breathing space.
We gutted the area at the back of the house to open up the flow. Cherry cabinetry, porcelain tile, and white oak floors blend perfectly to create a warm gathering place for the couple and their two boys. The kitchen is open to the new addition allowing everyone to be in the space together comfortably. We added a half-bath, laundry room, and mudroom for easier everyday living for this busy family.
The original sunroom was basically an enclosed porch. As another element of this colonial home remodel, we completely redesigned the space. We worked to match the home's exterior by blending the new siding into the old and added a set of beautiful French doors spilling out onto the deck. All new windows flood the space with natural light and give an expansive view of the yard. This old porch is now a comfortable four-season room for the entire family.
A new powder room was built, and the design was in keeping with the 1940s style of the home. The new addition gave us the space to include a functional mudroom, laundry area, and a half bath. We used a traditional tile floor and back and white color scheme to honor the home's history and 1940s style. The mudroom offers a large amount of storage space for sports equipment, winter coats, and boots.
The homeowners received the kitchen addition, half bath, mudroom, and a new four-season room that modernized their 1940 colonial home remodel, making it a more livable home.
